Reduce Inflammation: Home Remedies for Pimples

Uh Oh! You just woke up and while you are brushing your teeth what do you see?! A big, fat zit staring you in the face. You look like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer! Now what? Have no fear. While you can’t obliterate that ugly blemish before you leave the house for the day there are some things that you can do to diminish the redness and help speed the healing.

Bring Down the Inflammation and Redness

The first thing you can do is start by bringing down the inflammation and reducing the redness.

As always, make sure your hands are clean, and when dabbing treatments on your pimple use a clean swab or cotton ball.

  1. Wash your face thoroughly, patting it dry. Don’t rub your face with the towel – this will aggravate the oils on your skin even further.
  2. Don’t try popping the pimple, this is really not the answer. In fact, by popping a pimple you run the risk of spreading the infection and causing more pimples! In some cases this can also lead to permanent scarring.
  3. Crush an asprin and mix it with a little water. Dab the paste on your pimple and leave it on for about 20 seconds. (This will help to alleviate the swelling and redness).
  4. Now make a paste out of 1 TBSP each honey, oatmeal, lemon juice and sour cream. Pack some of the paste on your pimple and leave it on for about 15 minutes. This will reduce the redness even further. (You may have to add a bit more oatmeal to get it to a consistency where it will ‘stick’).
  5. Finally, hold an ice cube to your pimple for a minute or so.

Step Out With Confidence

By now your pimple will be less red and inflamed and the pimple should be a lot less noticeable than it was. You can pat on a little medicated concealer if you wish, and you are ready for your day. Try not to keep touching it through the day as this can irritate it with the oils and dirt on your fingers.

If you find that your skin is oily try not to wash it too much. This can encourage your skin to produce even more oil to replace what you have washed away! A good rule of thumb is to wash your face in the morning and before bed. Blotting your face with tissue or cosmetic blotting paper throughout the day can alleviate some of the excess oil without bothering your skin.

Before bed repeat the process (minus the concealer!) and then either put some tea tree oil or witch hazel on your pimple, your favorite home remedy, or a medicated cream. The important thing to remember is to keep the area clean and to minimize the spread of bacterial.
